Beginnings

The
Tudor Revival-style house features high ceilings and a central stairwell filled
with light from the upstairs hall windows. Tall trees shade the house.
In
this house Welty entertained her family, her many Jackson friends, and visiting
friends from all over the world.
And it was to
this house that Welty, a passionate traveler, always returned to create her novels
and short stories on what she called "fiction's only theme": human life.
A
writer cannot escape his material; that is, he cannot escape where and when he
was born. But his theme he chooses.
