Archaeological and Historic Sites Volunteer Opportunities
The MDAH Archaeological and Historic Sites Section's (Historic Preservation Division) main office is based in Jackson with locations in Clarksdale and Starkville. The section's mission is to identify, preserve, and protect Mississippi's rich prehistoric and historic archaeological heritage through expanded public and professional education and stewardship. Volunteers are needed to assist staff in systematic archaeological survey and inventory, maintaining and developing productive partnerships with various organizations and agencies, promoting effective archaeological programs and archaeological research.
The Jackson office is located at 100 South State Street (Charlotte Capers Building).
The Clarksdale office is located at 130 LeFlore Avenue.
Volunteers partner with MDAH employees to serve as guardians of our state’s history. From behind-the-scenes to up-close and personal, there very well may be a volunteer opportunity that is a match for you. Our department strives to maintain a community-based volunteer resource that is diverse, knowledgeable, talented, and skilled.
The rewards and benefits of volunteering with us are many. There is much prestige and honor serving as one of our ambassadors to people from many cultures. Volunteers receive a 15% discount on most merchandise at Mississippi History Store locations (Old Capitol Museum, Eudora Welty House, and through mail orders). Active volunteers are included in volunteer appreciation activities provided by the Museum Division and/or the site(s) with which you are volunteering. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the department. Appropriate volunteer candidates are referred directly to the person who supervises these projects.
