Music of the Delta

Saturday, May 4, 1 p.m. at Winterville Mounds. Music of the Delta. Winterville Mounds director and ethnomusicologist Mark Howell will discuss the different kinds of music heard in the Delta from the beginning of its settlement until the present day. A variety of instrument artifacts will be shown and played, as well as songs from Native American, African American, and Euro-American traditions. First Annual Winterville Knapp-In

Friday–Saturday, May 10-11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Winterville Mounds. First Annual Winterville Knapp-In. Knappers from around the country will gather to trade tools and demonstrate the ancient techniques. For those interested in participating, flint knap kits will be available for sale. Wednesday–Friday, March 13–15, 10 a.m.–noon at Winterville Mounds. Spring Break Activities for Kids. Children will participate in chunkey stone games, stickball games, relay races, snake dancing, and kite flying. The public is invited to bring kites and participate in a kite flying contest on Friday, March 15, at 1:30 p.m. Kite flying will be permitted on the grounds the entire week. Arkansas survey archaeologist at Toltec Mounds Elizabeth Horton will speak on archaeological evidence for basketry and fabric during the pre-Mississippian and Mississippian periods. In addition to other recent organic discoveries, she will touch on evidence of pre-European cotton in the Arkansas River Valley. Light refreshments will be served.
