2011 Events
July 19-January 15, 2012. And the Nominees are...The Mississippi Hall of Fame. This exhibit highlights the Mississippi Hall of Fame and promotes the nomination of worthy candidates who have made significant contributions to Mississippi.
October 25-January 3, 2012. Pieces of the Past: Hero of War. Rotating artifact exhibit features the sword and scabbard worn by Mississippian William Barksdale, who was mortally wounded during the Civil War. Barksdale’s body lay in state at the Old Capitol.
December, Food For Thought. Visit the Old Capitol, decorated in nineteenth-century holiday style, and donate books and non-perishable foods during December. Special programming for school groups highlights the value of good citizenship.
January 17-February 12, 2012. Promote the Vote: My Choice, My Voice, My Vote. This exhibit features winning artwork from the Secretary of State's annual Promote the Vote Campaign.
January 17-December 31, 2012. Your Vote Counts. Students use a real voting machine to vote on a variety of issues. The program is sponsored by the Offi ce of the Secretary of State.
Saturday, January 19, 6:00–8:00 p.m. An Evening with General Andrew Jackson. Seventh president, Andrew Jackson, portrayed by local historian Bill Patrick, will present a stirring overview of his life and presidency. Special performances by mezzo-soprano Lester Senter Wilson. February, Black History: Road to the Vote. Students fourth grade and up learn the 19th century political history that paved the way for the modern civil rights movement. An introductory overview and tour of the Old Capitol will cover such topics as slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the 1868 and 1890 Mississippi Constitutions. Reservations are required.
March, Directing Democracy: Mississippi’s Elected Officials. School program for fourth graders and up that explains the roles of various state elected officials as well as the process for how we elect them. Students will learn about the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, the state legislature, and others. Reservations are required.
March 6-June 24, 2012. In Session: Legislative Acts of the Old Capitol. This exhibit showcases important, infl uential, and even comical legislation that was passed in the Old Capitol when it served as statehouse from 1839 to 1902.
Monday, April 7, 10:00–2:00 p.m. Gathering on the Green. Celebrate downtown Jackson with food, live music, crafts, and other festivities on the Old Capitol Green.
