The reading rooms in the William F. Winter Archives and History Building are open to the public at no charge, with experienced staff to assist researchers.

Off-site patrons may find many answers through the Ready Reference Help Desk, available by telephone at 601-576-6876 or by FAX at 601-576-6964. The Help Desk provides quick answers to basic questions using available reference works and finding aids. Requests requiring further research must be submitted in writing.

NOTE: On October 1, 2015, changes went into effect for ALL product costs, service fees, and use fees; including in-state and out-of-state written reference requests to cover increased costs.

Research for written requests is assessed at an hourly rate. This fee provides for one hour of staff research to answer a request and as many as ten photocopies of material that may be located during the research process. If materials in excess of the initial ten photocopies are located, you will be notified of any additional charges prior to the additional copying. Reference fees will not be prorated nor refunds given for staff research resulting in the production of fewer than ten photocopies. Upon completion of our search, or the expiration of the one hour research time, you will be sent a letter explaining the results.

When preparing your request, please state your question clearly and provide as many pertinent details as possible. Mail the letter with a check or money order payable to “MDAH, Archives and Records Services Division,” to:

MDAH, Archives and Records Services
ATTN:  Reference Services
P.O. Box 571
Jackson, MS 39205-0571

All in-state reference requests must be accompanied by a $10.00 service fee. In-state refers to requests from those residing in the state of Mississippi.

All out-of-state reference requests must be accompanied by a $35.00 service fee.

Please do not submit more than the specified amount.  Due to the number of requests we receive, we must limit our search to one hour per request.

Be sure to include an address to which the search results will be mailed as well as a telephone number or email address at which archives staff can reach you to discuss any optional photocopy or scanning charges.

A list of freelance researchers is maintained for more extensive projects.
