Z 1670.000 BENNETT (LEVI W.) DIARIES AND LETTERS 1839 - 1843; 1860 - 1871; 1886 MDAH only has microfilm. (MF Roll # 36301) Biography-HistoryLevi W. Bennett was born on October 2, 1839, and died in 1921. He was the son of Christopher Bennett and Rachael Beauchamp Bennett. During the years preceding the Civil War, Bennett was a farmer and teacher near Cadiz, Henry County, Indiana. He joined the United States Army in 1862 and served at Vicksburg during the siege of that city. He also was stationed at New Orleans briefly and for longer periods on the Texas coast and in central Louisiana. Before returning to Indiana at the end of the war, he was stationed in Pascagoula, and Mobile, Alabama. He married Rachael Leslie at some point (date unknown). He later moved to Missouri and died there in 1921.Scope and ContentThe collection is composed of seven volumes of diaries (either 8x12 cm. or 8x15 cm.) that cover the period 18601871, eight letters (five written during the Civil War and three written in 1886 when he was applying for a pension), and a furlough given Bennett in 1862. The diaries contain entries which, though not daily, are fairly regular during the war. Information included in the diaries covers the reaction of Bennett and his acquaintances to the outbreak of hostilities in 1861, and his involvement in the siege of Vicksburg as well as several skirmishes in Louisiana.Series Identification
