Left: "A great gas well 'blowing out' near Jackson, Hinds County. Gas from this field supplies communities in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, through a great system of pipelines." Right: "April 1st, 1930 saw the first gas well completed in the great Jackson Gas Field. A company 'wild-catting' for oil found gas in an unexpected quantity and immediately scores of holes were being drilled, the district became a veritable beehive of industry, with each drilling crew making frantic efforts to 'bring-in' their well while the field was still young. At the present (1938) time drilling operations continue while the field is widening it horizon."
