Pictorial History: Mississippi Agriculture and Industry, Arranged by Mississippi W.P.A. Historical Research Project.
"In the house shown in the photograph above, located in Amite County, now known as the Butler home, it is said, here Gail Borden, who was living there in 18--, trying to regain his health, worked out the formula for condensed milk. Using the milk from a cow, that his host had placed at his disposal, and with only crude implements he cooked down, or evaporated the milk on a kitchen-'wood'-stove producing the first condensed milk. It was from this humble beginning that a great industry came into being, permitting milk to be so preserved that it could be kept or shipped great distances, a truly great achievement eventually accounting for all the condensaries now operated."
