The online catalog allows users to browse the descriptions of most materials at the state archives—from books and manuscripts to photographs and newspapers. This can be an especially useful tool for out-of-town researchers, allowing them to compile a list of relevant resources before traveling to the archives to work on their projects.
Most of the actual records are available only at the Winter Building and not online. However, there are many finding aids on the Web site—microfilm indexes, guides to conducting research in the different types of records, a bibliography of books and articles on Mississippi history, and more.
There are two searches—basic and advanced. The basic search is the simplest and likeliest to return the greatest number of results. It allows you to search for words that appear anywhere in the catalog record, or for authors, titles, or subjects. If the basic search returns too many results, the advanced search can help refine your focus by searching by multiple fields and limiting your search by collection or format.
