Natchez Powwow Set For March 24, 25, 2007Traditional Native American dancing, foods, and crafts will be found in abundance at the 2007 Natchez Powwow Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25, at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. This will be the nineteenth time the Grand Village has hosted the annual event. "This powwow is significant because of its location at an actual mound site," said Jim Barnett, director of the Grand Village. "Natchez Indians lived and danced here at the Grand Village and that long history makes this all the more special."
Craft and food booths open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and at 11 a.m. on Sunday, selling such traditional Native American crafts as silver and turquoise jewelry, handmade clothing and moccasins, pottery, baskets, books, paintings, and bows and arrows. Food vendors offer traditional dishes such as fry bread and Indian tacos. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children age twelve and under. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, a National Historic Landmark, is administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The 128-acre-site features the Temple Mound, Great Sun's Mound, and Abandoned Mound, a reconstructed Natchez Indian house, museum, gift shop, and nature trail. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sundays 1:30 to 5 p.m. The Grand Village is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Boulevard, Natchez.
