Report from the Director

Winterville, USM Partner on Long-term Excavation Project

Winterville Mounds, the National Historic Landmark Native American site operated by MDAH near Greenville, recently embarked on a multi-year archaeological project in partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at USM has established a field school at Winterville, where graduate anthropology students are working on excavations of the mounds and surrounding areas. The project's long-term goal is to develop a greater understanding of the Winterville Mounds and of the people who built, inhabited, and used the site. I want to thank H. Edwin Jackson, professor of anthropology at USM, for his leadership in establishing the field school.
