Report from the Director

Records Management Division moves to Winter Building

In July, I joined with other staff members in welcoming our colleagues in the Records Management Division to the Winter Building, where they share space on the third floor with the Local Government Records Office. The Records Management Division had been housed on High Street at the State Records Center, but that building is slated to be demolished to make way for the entrance to the new farmer's market. A new state records warehouse will be provided at a location that has not yet been determined, but staff offices will remain in the Winter Building.

The department has taken this opportunity to streamline the operations of the Records Management Division by discontinuing the microfilming program and reassigning its employees to other areas. This program, which had microfilmed documents for state agencies, was rendered obsolete by the emergence of new technologies such as scanning, imaging, and electronic filing. The program in the Archives and Library Division that microfilms archival materials remains in place.
