Report from the Director
Local Government Records Program Attracts New Participants
The Local Government Records Office continued working with counties and municipalities to help them manage their public records. This office, still staffed by only one person, has conducted extensive projects in several counties and municipalities that have increased records storage capacity, reduced storage costs, and improved access to public records. During the year projects were initiated, continued, or completed in Tippah, Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Madison, Rankin, Clarke, and Jackson counties, and in the cities of Tupelo, Brookhaven, and Natchez. During the year six county boards of supervisors voted to participate in the Local Government Records Program by assessing an additional one-dollar filing fee to cover records management costs within the county and to pay for the cost of the program within the Department of Archives and History. In 2006 the MDAH will request that the Mississippi Legislature reauthorize this valuable program.
