Report from the Director

New Archives and Library Director

In January, MDAH welcomed Julia Marks Young as the new director of the Archives and Library Division. Young came to the department from Georgia State University, where she was head of special collections and archives. She has Mississippi roots as well, having worked at the University of Southern Mississippi during the 1980s, first in the School of Library Service and later as senior manuscripts processor at the McCain Library and Archives. Julia's wealth of experience has already proven a great benefit to MDAH.

MDAH Publishes Aids to Research

Three new aids to research at the state archives were published in October 2004. "Archival Collections of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History" lists the department's research materials housed at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building in Jackson. "Research at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History" is an on-site guide to the Public Reading Rooms in the Winter building. "Researching Your African American Ancestors at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History" presents a starting plan for amateur genealogists and highlights available resources. The Archives and Library Division hopes to continue to publish such research aids as funds are available.
