Council of State Archivists

The Council of State Archivists is a national organization made up of directors of the principal archival agencies in each state. By articulating and advocating the significance of historical records, promoting sound archival practices, and providing leadership to local historical records programs, CoSA works to ensure that our nation’s historical records are valued, preserved, and widely used.

CoSA’s Web site offers a wealth of information about the management and preservation of historical materials, particularly government records. These include:

• Archives Resource Center: Program resources developed by and for state archives and records programs
• Statement on Digital Access Partnerships: Guidance to government archivists negotiating contracts to digitize public records and make them available online
• Rescuing Family Records: a practical manual to help families prepare for disasters

CoSA’s current initiatives include

• IPER: Intergovernmental Preparedness for Essential Records: training for state and local governments on vital records
• “Closest to Home”: action plan for stronger local government archives in each state, and
• Emergency Preparedness Initiative, including a customized Pocket Response Plan (PReP)
