2010 Annual Report

Letter from the Director

Like every other state agency, MDAH sustained severe budget cuts during FY 2010. We have tried not to reduce programming because during a fiscal crisis the demand for our services increases. Schools need outreach programs like the Traveling Trunks and Mississippi History on Loan, and families rely on free museums and educational events. Researchers seek free online resources, and owners of historic properties count on tax credits. And the income generated by heritage tourism attractions is critical to the state budget.

So our challenge this past year was to maintain a high level of public service with fewer staff and resources. To meet this challenge, we increased our reliance on volunteers and grant funding, and continued to depend on the dedicated and experienced MDAH staff.

Let me offer a few highlights of the work of the Department of Archives and History in FY 2010.
