2010 Annual Report
Planning Underway for Upcoming Events
Freedom Rides 50th
Freedom Riders will travel to Mississippi from across the country in May 2011 to observe the fiftieth anniversary of the Freedom Rides. MDAH will develop an exhibit featuring newsfilm footage, photographs, artifacts, and documents from the collection. The exhibit will show at the Winter Building in Jackson from May to November 2011, after which it will travel to venues around the state. MDAH is also developing educational programming and teacher resources focusing on the Freedom Rides.
The Foundation for Mississippi History, which is serving as a conduit for contributions and expenses, has received several lead gifts to establish a fund in support of the Freedom Riders Fiftieth Anniversary celebration.
Civil War Sesquicentennial
MDAH will observe the sesquicentennial of the Civil War with a series of events beginning with the secession anniversary in 2011. We are also working to digitize documents, images, and artifacts relating to the Civil War for an Internet exhibit and for the Mississippi Timeline.
In 2017, Mississippi will celebrate our bicentennial. MDAH hopes that the Mississippi Legislature will fund construction of the Museum of Mississippi History during the 2011 session so that the museum will open in time for the Bicentennial celebration. I am serving with a number of legislators and citizens from across Mississippi on a Bicentennial Commission to plan the state’s celebration.
